Editor’s Note: In the past, all the artists and artisans who have been featured in Art from the ♥ have shared their creativity, passion and energy with others for the good of humanity.  Debby has quite a story, and I am sure that you will agree that she adds a whole new dimension to Art from the ♥.

I have been designing and selling jewelry since 1973. My favorite materials are gemstones, glass, sterling silver and really any sparkly thing that catches my eye!  In the spring of 2008, I had a much unexpected stroke at the age of 51 that left my right hand impaired. At first, I thought I would have to give up making jewelry. After I got over my stroke pity-party, I decided to try making a few things. I visited a local bead shop, brought a bunch of new trinkets home, got out my old jewelry supplies and thus started by own brand of rehab.

Two weeks after I had my stroke, I also had a concurrent heart attack, then kidney failure that triggered my Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) into high gear. So now, when I start a piece, it’s meticulously planned out, made, double, triple and quadruple checked before I post it. Of course, that’s before I obsess over making the photo look perfect as well!  So, what you get is a one-of-a-kind (OOAK) piece that is painstakingly made by me and then gift-wrapped and sent to you. In addition, you are helping in my therapy.

My motivation is to get my right hand back to the same condition it was pre-stroke. It is also very important to me to ensure that people know the warning signs of a stroke. Remember FAST. FAST stands for face, arms, speech and time. The acronym is being used as part of a campaign by the Stroke Awareness Foundation to educate the public about warning signs of stroke and to seek proper medical services immediately. I also want people to remember that a stroke is a brain attack – just like a heart attack in another part of the body. Strokes don’t care about how old you are, the color of your skin or how much money you make. By passing on what happened to me, I am hoping that a life can be saved by knowing the warning signs of a stroke.

Starbabyonline features unique sterling silver, glass and semi-precious gems jewelry. I’m planning on learning to work with Precious Metal Clay (PMC) next. I have loved working with clay since back in the 70s, and the idea of combining silver with clay fascinates me.

  4. I have known Debby for many years now, and was so worried that after her stroke, she would not be the same Debby I had known before. She has become even stronger, and even when she was having so many problems, she was always there to encourage others. I love her jewelry and love Debby so much. Thank you Foxy G. Knits, for featuring Deb. She is truly an inspiration!

  6. Okay, here’s where blaming my memory on the stroke comes in handy. And yes, for the record, it did affect my memory as well. I have Aphasia ( which is getting better every day, but is still there. Like now. LOL.

Anyway, the corrected link to my blog is: – doh! I’ll be starting writing again soon, focusing in the first few blogs about techniques for promoting your items. Hope you follow my blog and look for updates!

    Thanks again!

  7. I have known Debby since we were small children. I am so thankful that she was able to reach inside and continue to do what she loves while she was rehabing. She has always been a very creative and positive person. I am so glad to have her as a friend. Congratulations on your accomplishments.
