Foxy G's Den of i-KNIT-quity

Enchanted Craft from an Enchanted Land

[Editor’s Note: On April 1st, Foxy G. Knits will begin shipping to Australia and New Zealand. In celebration, Foxy G’s Den of i-KNIT-quity is pleased to feature Enchanted Quilling, a fabulous Australian handmade paper quilling artist.]

Drive two hours north of Sydney, Australia, and you will arrive in Nelson Bay, a quaint little town on the southern coastline of Port Stephens. It is a major tourism centre, particularly for dolphin and whale watching, surfing, diving, fishing and other recreational aquatic activities. This is where you will find Janice designing and creating her quilled items that she sells worldwide on etsy, as well as in local gift shops and the arts and craft centre.

Janice has been hand crafting all her life, but became addicted to quilling in the past few years.

Quilling is the age-old art of rolling strips of paper into coils and pressing them into 3-dimensional creations. She is very proud of the fact that her handmade paper quilled cards are not only visually enjoyable, but also delightful to the touch.

Designs include floral themes, animals and birdlife, creatures from the sea, fashion and (my favorite!) cupcakes with character!

Postcards for Satori

Filed under: Monday Morning Musings — foxygknits @ 12:06 am

Satori and sisterSatori Lewis has experienced more challenges in her young life than most adults.  This beautiful little is 10 years old has Spinal Muscular Atrophy and is confined to a power wheelchair.  But don’t feel sorry for this rock star – she has a fabulous sense of humor and gets straight A’s in school – even though she misses an average of 40 days of school a year.

According to her mom, Melissa (HautTotes on etsy and HautTotes on twitter), because Tori is so physically weak, her body doesn’t hold itself up well. She has developed severe scoliosis, and the curve of her spine is now beginning to crush her lung. On March 31st, she will have full spinal fusion.

The family is traveling from their home in Nevada to UC Davis Children’s Hospital for the procedure with an estimated hospital stay of 7 – 10 days.  Melissa is asking people to send Tori postcards from all over the world.  She thinks that the messages and pictures will be fun for her. And she plans to turn this into a geography lesson by purchasing an world atlas and having Tori mark off states and countries.

Melissa stresses that they have great insurance, a fantastic surgeon and a world renowned hospital.  Tori is not in need of anything more than some fun messages and exciting postmarks.

This is how the postcard should be addressed, and please be sure to include the surgery date:

So, it’s March again.  Let’s see, daylight savings time begins.  And there’s Pi Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Ides of March (poor Julius), Passover, Palm Sunday and oh yes, basketball.

For many years, I lived  in ACC Country, so I am partial to that conference.  (When I was a resident of the Research Triangle, UNC played in the NCAA Tournament, not as a #4 seed in the NIT – yikes!)

When my children were small, I took them to a Duke basketball game.  Every time the opposing team scored, my younger son would cheer.  When he was asked why he was cheering for the other team, he explained in his three-year-old logic that when they scored, Duke got the ball back.  Makes perfect sense to me!  (#1 seed in the South)

Knit 1, Purl 2…Knitting Needle Jewelry Just for You

It should come as no surprise that the proprietress of a shop named “Foxy G. Knits” should receive knitting needles as a gift.  However, it’s the “wristification” of the needles that is so fantastic.  Here are the knitting needle bracelets that I received from my son and daughter-in-law for Chanukah.  Are they not fabulous?

This very talented designer from Australia also had a necklace that caught my eye:

The next two pieces were designed by a Roswell, GA artist whose work I have admired in local knit shops as well as at craft shows.  Her medium is aluminum, rather than plastic, knitting needles:

I am not sure what is in the water in Australia or what they teach the kids in school, but they really turn a mean knitting needle:

And the One World – One Heart Winners Are…

All good things must come to an end, and the One World – One Heart Magic Carpet Ride is over for 2010.   Before we go any further, a very special thank you to Lisa, host/creator of the One World – One Heart event who performed the  monumental task of designing the badge, creating the guidelines and coordinating all the blogs – which must have been a lot like trying to herd cats!

It has been a fun ride visiting people all over the world and welcoming them to Atlanta. I started out offering a scarf as my giveaway.  The response was so great that I added another scarf after 100+ entries.  And, as the saying goes, “If you crochet it, they will come!”  So, I added a third scarf.  To make it as fair for the people who signed up on the last day as on the first day, I chose one winner from each 100+ entries.  Without further ado:

The winner of the purple and pink ruffle scarf that was hand crocheted by my almost 91-year-old mammalicious is: Carapace.

The winner of the red and navy ruffle scarf also hand crocheted by the same mammalicious is: Theresa of Faerie Moon Creations.

One World One Heart Giveaway

And the winner of the camel/tan ruffle scarf blah – blah – blah is: Janice of Enchanted Quilling.

One World One Heart Giveaway

I wish that each of you who entered could have won.  What I would like to do is offer you 10% off all items in my shop (excluding shipping)  through February 28th.  If you will put OWOH in the message to seller, I will refund the 10% after your payment is completed.

Until we meet again, goodbye, farewell,  so long, adieu arrivederci, auf wiedersehen, sayonara, shalom.  Y’all come back real soon, ya hear.

GO RED for Women!

February is National Heart Month. The Go Red for Women movement celebrates the energy, passion and power we have as women to band together to wipe out heart disease and stroke. Cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 killer of American women and the cause of one in every three female deaths. African American and Hispanic women are even more likely to suffer from cardiovascular diseases due to higher rates of excessive weight, diabetes, high blood pressure and metabolic syndrome.  They are also less likely than white women to know that they may have major risk factors.

The perception that heart disease is a “man’s disease” must be changed. By teaching more and more women how to talk to their doctors about heart disease, thousands of lives can be saved each year because the good news is that heart disease is often preventable!

One World One Heart – Magic Carpet Ride

One World One Heart BadgeWelcome to Foxy G. Knits Den of i-KNiT-quity, located in Atlanta, GA, Stop #113 on your Magic Carpet Ride.  You will have an opportunity to enter a giveaway in just a few minutes, but first, let me give you a quick tour of Atlanta:

Atlanta is the home of Coca-Cola.  Coke is all they drink here, so don’t ask for any other soft drink unless it’s made by Coca-Cola.  Even if you want something other than a Coca-Cola, it’s still called Coke.

  • Our 8 AM rush hour runs from 6:30 to 10:30 a.m., and our 5 PM rush hour runs from 3:00 to 7:30 p.m. Friday’s rush hour begins on Thursday afternoon and lasts through 2 a.m. on Saturday.
  • “Fixinto” is one word: I’m fixinto go to the store.
  • Sweet Tea is appropriate for all meals, and you begin drinking it when you’re two years old.
  • “Jeet?” is actually a phrase meaning “Did you eat?”
  • No need to buy a ladder or mattress in Atlanta.  Just go to one of the Interstates, and you will soon find one in the middle of the road.
  • The falling of one raindrop causes all drivers to immediately forget all traffic rules.  If a single snowflake falls, the city is paralyzed for three days, and it’s on all the channels as a news flash every 15 minutes for a week.  Overnight, all grocery stores will be sold out of milk, bread, bottled water, toilet paper and beer.
  • If you have ever had the pleasure of having to change planes here in Atlanta, then you know that the gates at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport are about 32 miles away from the main concourse.  So wear sneakers, and pack a lunch.

Well, thanks for taking a little tour of our fair city.   Now for the giveaway…I want to be sure that you are warm enough, as well as stunning, on the rest of your magic carpet ride, so please feel free to enter to win this Luscious Lavender Wide Ruffle Scarf.  It was hand crocheted with love by my 90 ½ year old mammalicious.

Lavender Scarf Giveaway

This Magic Carpet Ride has become dizzifying.   (And if that’s not in your Funk & Wagnell, I just made it up!)  There has been such a wonderful response, that I am adding a second giveaway – another large ruffle scarf hand crocheted by mamalicious.  This one is red and purple:

I’m back – with yet another scarf to add to the giveaway.  This should greatly increase your odds of winning!
