ARTIST: ROBIN NORGREN – IN HER OWN WORDS…

Have you ever just had a place that you know in your heart that you must visit before you die?  That place for me is India.  I have no relatives there nor do I know of anyone who lives there, but when anything comes along about aid to India, my heart strings tug.  So for years, I thought that I would do a humanitarian trip there, but finances have always been an issue.  Then, when I became certified as a yoga instructor, I thought that might be the vehicle to get me there.

Wrist Cuff

Wrist Cuff - Dream

I have also wanted to support an organization that helped in India, and in 2006, I learned about CARE on an Oprah segment. As one of the world’s leading international humanitarian organizations, CARE places special focus on working alongside poor women because, equipped with the proper resources, women have the power to help whole families and entire communities escape poverty.

Wrist Cuff - Friendship

Wrist Cuff - Friendship

Fast forward four years to 2010 when I decided to connect to India in a way that is unique and in line with my current life as a stay-at-home mom and artist.  Through my etsy shop, Well of Creations, I am donating all the proceeds (after PayPal and etsy fees) from the items in the Wrist Cuffs for India Section to Power Within, CARE’s new signature program.  Their goal is to empower 10 million vulnerable girls, primarily ages 10-14, to access primary education and gain leadership skills by 2015.

My hope is that as I give my time and resources through my craft that others will support this worthwhile organization and at the same time receive a beautiful creation to remind them of their generosity. And I finally feel connected.

One World One Heart – Magic Carpet Ride

One World One Heart BadgeWelcome to Foxy G. Knits Den of i-KNiT-quity, located in Atlanta, GA, Stop #113 on your Magic Carpet Ride.  You will have an opportunity to enter a giveaway in just a few minutes, but first, let me give you a quick tour of Atlanta:

Atlanta is the home of Coca-Cola.  Coke is all they drink here, so don’t ask for any other soft drink unless it’s made by Coca-Cola.  Even if you want something other than a Coca-Cola, it’s still called Coke.

  • Our 8 AM rush hour runs from 6:30 to 10:30 a.m., and our 5 PM rush hour runs from 3:00 to 7:30 p.m. Friday’s rush hour begins on Thursday afternoon and lasts through 2 a.m. on Saturday.
  • “Fixinto” is one word: I’m fixinto go to the store.
  • Sweet Tea is appropriate for all meals, and you begin drinking it when you’re two years old.
  • “Jeet?” is actually a phrase meaning “Did you eat?”
  • No need to buy a ladder or mattress in Atlanta.  Just go to one of the Interstates, and you will soon find one in the middle of the road.
  • The falling of one raindrop causes all drivers to immediately forget all traffic rules.  If a single snowflake falls, the city is paralyzed for three days, and it’s on all the channels as a news flash every 15 minutes for a week.  Overnight, all grocery stores will be sold out of milk, bread, bottled water, toilet paper and beer.
  • If you have ever had the pleasure of having to change planes here in Atlanta, then you know that the gates at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport are about 32 miles away from the main concourse.  So wear sneakers, and pack a lunch.

Well, thanks for taking a little tour of our fair city.   Now for the giveaway…I want to be sure that you are warm enough, as well as stunning, on the rest of your magic carpet ride, so please feel free to enter to win this Luscious Lavender Wide Ruffle Scarf.  It was hand crocheted with love by my 90 ½ year old mammalicious.

Lavender Scarf Giveaway

This Magic Carpet Ride has become dizzifying.   (And if that’s not in your Funk & Wagnell, I just made it up!)  There has been such a wonderful response, that I am adding a second giveaway – another large ruffle scarf hand crocheted by mamalicious.  This one is red and purple:

Ruffle Scarf

I’m back – with yet another scarf to add to the giveaway.  This should greatly increase your odds of winning!

To be eligible, you need only to leave a comment below.  I’d love for you to leave your blog url so that others can visit your site.  If you would like to leave your facebook biz page url or twitter tag, I would be happy to fan you and/or follow you.

This giveaway will begin January 25, 2009 and end on February 14, 2009 at 11:59 pm EST. The winners will be announced on February 15, 2009.  Random.org will be used to pick the winners, and they will have 72 hours to get back to me.

This giveaway is open worldwide, so good luck – and enjoy the rest of your trip!

Chicago Bears Crochet Earflap Hat

Chicago Bears Crochet Earflap Hat

I am lucky enough to have two perfectly healthy children and am able to keep them warm and fed.  While I feel no guilt for being able to provide my children with the basic necessities of a comfortable life, I feel so terrible for the children in the world who don’t.  I just couldn’t imagine my kids having to go to bed hungry or cold.  While we don’t always have it in the budget to send money to every charity that can help a child somewhere, I do have the time, yarn and skills to help them stay warm.  And a handmade hat or blanket has so much more meaning than one bought from a store (that was probably made in the same country to which some of my items are being shipped, ironically).

Toddler Armwarmers/Baby Legwarmers

Last year I held a promotion in my Vegkat on Etsy shop: You buy a hat; I donate a hat to Save the Children, an organization that donates hats to premature babies in Third World countries, along with safety and survival education kits for the mothers. So when a hat was purchased from my store, I would make one for a premie. I was able to send in 10 itty-bitty hats. If you go to my shop and look under my sent feedback, you can see the pictures of the hats I made attached to the feedback.

This summer, I started a new philanthropic promotion. For every item I sell, I will be making a square and sending it to Knit a Square …and make an AIDS orphan warm. The squares will be fitted together to make blankets for AIDS orphans. I will be sending in my package on November 1, 2009, and I’m hoping to send a heavy, monster box of squares! As with my last philanthropy project, I will be adding a picture of the square to the feedback.  So not only will you be receiving something super rad in the mail from me, but so will an orphan who lost his or her parents to AIDS.

Vegkat on Etsy features mostly hats, baby blankets and  iPod/cell phone cozies/socks.  I recently crocheted a cat toy for my kitties that looks like an eyeball, so those may make it to the shop someday soon.  There’s just something awesome about a cat chasing an eyeball through the house!

I just received an M.S. in elementary education, and I am hoping to get my first classroom this fall.  In the meantime, I have been substitute teaching in the local school district.  During the summers, I enjoy spending time with my husband and family.  Most of my crocheting is done at night and on the weekends while my hubby and I enjoy watching baseball.

My etsy shop, Jenco13, features handmade crocheted scarves, cup cozies, baby blankets, baby sweaters, pocketbooks and market bags, including custom designs for others.  Inspiration for colors comes from Cosmopolitan and Lucky magazines.

Currently, I  donate handmade scarves and blankets to CARE T0 KNIT, INC. who, in turn, distribute these items to cancer patients, babies born prematurely and others in need.  My family is my motivation for supporting this organization.  Both my grandmother’s and great aunt have been treated for breast cancer.  During those trying times, I realized the importance of family.

Sunshine Shells Baby Blanket

There are so many people that have been touched by different diseases, and when you watch them receive something that is handmade especially for them, the feeling is irreplaceable.  I have donated many scarves to friends and CARE T0 KNIT, INC. to make these times a little brighter.  CARE T0 KNIT, INC. is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide hand knit and crocheted items such as scarves, lap shawls, hats and other related accessories to those in shelters, hospitals, nursing homes and hospices.

Editor’s note: Jen is very modest and doesn’t like to extol her own virtues, so I will!  In addition to teaching and donating her beautiful handmade items to CARE TO KNIT, INC. and serving in a volunteer capacity as head of the public relations committee for the Etsy Twitter Team, in October, Jen will be donating her hair – for the third time – to Locks of Love.  Locks of Love is a non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada under age 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis.  Jen also doesn’t advertise that 10% of the money she earns through her crocheting goes into making care packages for the troops overseas.  She currently has several friends serving in the military and sends packages for them to share with their fellow soldiers.

I Brake for Sock Monkeys

From Wikipedia: The iconic sock monkeys made from Red-Heel socks emerged at the earliest in 1932, the year the Nelson Knitting Company of  Rockford, Illinois added the trademarked red heel to its product… Nelson Knitting added the red heel “de-tec-tip” to assure its customers they were buying “original Rockfords.” This red heel gave the monkeys their distinctive mouth.

In 1955, Nelson Knitting was awarded the design patent on sock monkeys and began including the pattern with every pair of socks. The sock monkey doll was then used in promotional campaigns celebrating the widespread application of their product by inventive homemakers in the field of monkey manufacturing.

Etsians have come up with some very clever and unique sock monkey items, beginning with this vintage red heel sock monkey that was made by hoffeeandanuffin.   However, #213 is not your mama’s sock monkey.  She is a total  diva doll with eyelashes to die for.

Coffee, Beer and Yarn…

“Coffee, beer, yarn.  That’s all I need.”  So reads LazyTCrochet’s bio on twitter.   LazyT, or Tricia, and I definitely have two things in common – coffee and yarn – make that three – the Midwest!

Lazy T’s features knit and crochet fashions and accessories  that include wearable shawls, shrugs, sweaters and one-of-a-kind hat, headband and scarf designs.  I am crazy about her crocheted hats.  This lightweight, yellow sunshine flowered beanie is so bright and cheery:

And this simple cloche-style hat with fuzzy boucle yarns in bright green includes a black satin bow repurposed from a costume:

Lazy T designed this oversized, slouch-style hat after watching the Winter X Games this year. Winter sports are the perfect setting for big, chunky, fun and functional hats. It is made out of100% chunky wool:
